Eye Substitutions
This project is a fully rigged 360° version of Plankton from SpongeBob SquarePants, created in Toon Boom Harmony Premium 24 with a focus on clean deformation, animator-friendly controls, and expressive performance systems.
The turnaround is built across eight frames:
Frames 1–5 use unique hand-drawn angles
Frames 6–8 use mirrored versions of existing poses to complete the full 360° rotation efficiently while maintaining visual consistency
Rig Features
• Fully deformer-based workflow
The rig uses deformers throughout the setup instead of peg-based animation, allowing for more flexible and organic motion.
Deformers were implemented in:
Arms
Legs
Eyebrow
Both antennas
• Custom pupil control system
The eye is built with a controllable pupil setup, allowing for smooth directional eye movement and more expressive acting.
• Eye substitution system
A dedicated eye slider includes 9 substitution options for:
Blinks
Expressions
Extreme poses
Stylized reactions
• Mouth substitution system
The rig includes 21 mouth substitutions designed for both:
Lip sync
Character-specific acting expressions
• Master controller setup
Custom slider-based controls were created for:
Eye substitutions
Mouth substitutions
Pupil movement
Character turnaround

Project Goals
The goal of this rig was to create a compact but highly expressive deformation system that balanced:
Technical structure
Animation usability
Strong character performance
Special attention was given to maintaining clean silhouettes, avoiding deformation artifacts, and creating intuitive controls for fast posing and animation.
